Intermatic HA09
From HomeSeer
The Intermatic HA09 is a Z-Wave Controller, which can work in Primary or Secondary mode. Since the HA09 lacks any PC interface, HomeSeer can only use it in Secondary mode. Unfortunately, Z-Wave doesn't allow convenient access to all issued commands the way X-10 does.Contents |
[edit] Capabilities
- Six (6) "channels" or sets of On/Off buttons
- Dim/Bright by holding the buttons down
- Each button set can be taught multiple (up to 16) devices and the desired brightness level for each. This does not require HomeSeer macros.
- But the relative dim levels are only set for the "On" button; the "Off" button turns all devices associated with that "channel" off. In other words, "on" can set variable dim levels, but "off" does not.
[edit] Shortcomings relative to the X-10 HR12A (PalmPad)
- Rather more expensive
- The PalmPad supports 16 separate device codes
- Z-Wave does not inherently allow the HA09 to talk directly to HomeSeer to launch events.
[edit] Advantages relative to the X-10 HR12A (PalmPad)
- Z-Wave device control (RF) has higher reliability than X-10 device control (PLC)
- Elegance of a pure Z-Wave system, if Z-Wave is what you have
- Due to the mesh network, Z-Wave remote commands (RF) are more reliable and less dependent on the RF Bridge position than X-10 with an RR501
- Should be faster. (The perception does not necessarily bear that out.)
[edit] Usage with HomeSeer
The HA09 may be used merely with the same devices that HomeSeer otherwise controls, or with some trickery and the use of a proxy module serving essentially as a virtual device visible to HomeSeer, it can cause HomeSeer to trigger events. But since the latter requires a Z-Wave module per event to be triggered, an X-10 PalmPad kit may be the better solution for that particular problem.
[edit] Setting up the Remote (Secondary Controller) from a Z-Troller
Important: These steps will wipe out the memory of the HA09. The result will be that every channel must be added again from scratch. Unfortunately there's no way to merely send a minor "network update"; if you add a Z-Wave device and want the HA09 to be able to talk to it, you must start from scratch again. Additionally, the network can only have a single primary controller; this is presumably your Z-Troller. (If it isn't, look into it!) Do not copy the channel data, just the network data. Assuming the Z-Troller as a source (master controller) and an Intermatic HA09 as the secondary controller, do the following:
- In HomeSeer, select Setup - Interfaces - Manage (Z-Wave) - Create Secondary Controller
- On the HA09, Press and Hold "Include" (under the sliding door) for five seconds, until both LEDs flash
- Release the Include button and hit the 2-Off button.
- The Z-Troller will not light up, but the HA09 green LED will flash.
- Within 20 seconds or so, HomeSeer should report that the Operation Was Successful
[edit] Adding Devices to the Remote (Secondary Controller)
To add an individual device...
- Press and Hold both the On and Off button for the desired channel (1-6), until both LEDs begin flashing
- Release the channel buttons.
- Press and hold the "Include" button
- On the module or device, press the Program or Power button until at the desired level.
- Release the "Include" button.
This can done for multiple devices on a single channel. Each can have separate dim levels, but only for the "On" setting. All "devices" in the "channel" will be set "Off" when "Off" is hit; there is no customizing of the levels for "Off".
